Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully

Delta GEMS serves teenage females, ages 14-18. GEMS was created to foster the success of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy program by continuing to provide educational and cultural enrichment to young ladies throughout high school. Delta GEMS is designed to provide an opportunity for young ladies to interact with positive role models by developing long-term mentoring relationships and to help them develop skills to counteract many of the negative aspects of our society.

The Mission of the Program

The young ladies participate in developmental program connectivity activities that are geared towards enhancing their knowledge and education regarding health issues, personal growth, career and job training. The primary goal and mission of the program is to prepare teenage girls for the challenges of the future by helping them reach their highest potential and to assist the young ladies in functioning intellectually, socially, and emotionally in society.

Additional goals include:

– To instill the need to excel academically
– To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;
– To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their future in high school and beyond
– To create compassionate, caring, and community-minded young women by actively involving them in service-learning and community service opportunities

The program also provides cultural and educational enrichment through activities and workshops focused on Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service.
